The Importance of Charity and Helping Others During Hajj and Umrah
Hajj and Umrah are not merely individual acts of worship; they are also a great test of brotherhood, lived together by millions of believers. On this journey, helping others is an inseparable part of the worship itself.
Helping Others Is Also Worship
The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that Allah helps His servant as long as the servant helps his brother. In the holy lands, taking an elderly person by the arm, offering water to the weary, and guiding someone who has lost their way are deeds recorded in one's book of rewards, just like tawaf and prayer.
Brotherhood Within the Group
- Be understanding with your room-mates and coach companions; small sacrifices bring great peace.
- Watch over the bags, walking pace and medicine times of elderly or unwell companions.
- Respecting the group's order and the guide's instructions is also a duty; delays take from everyone's time of worship.
Charity in the Haram
Just as worship in Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi is promised multiplied reward, charity given there is also hoped to carry great virtue. Distributing water, helping those in need, and showing kindness to the workers are among the doors of this blessing.
Patience Is Charity Too
Smiling at someone who steps on your foot in the crowd, not complaining while waiting, not being harsh when tired... This is perhaps the most difficult and most precious charity of Hajj and Umrah. Allah states in the Quran that there is to be no obscenity, sin or quarrelling during Hajj (Al-Baqarah, 197).
Remember: everyone returns from the sacred journey with their tawaf and prayers; the fortunate one also returns with the good character they gained.
