What to Do After Returning from Umrah
Umrah is not a journey that ends, but one that begins: the real task is carrying the spiritual state gained in the holy lands into daily life. Here is some advice for after your return:
1. Maintain Your Worship Habits
For a believer who became accustomed to congregational prayer, night worship and Quran recitation in Masjid al-Haram, the greatest gain is continuing these habits at home. Take care to pray the five daily prayers on time and to read the Quran daily.
2. Preserve the Moral Gains
In ihram we learned to avoid quarrelling, harsh words and backbiting. Maintaining this beauty of speech and conduct after Umrah is among the best signs of an accepted act of worship.
3. Avoid Ostentation
Sharing memories of Umrah is pleasant, but worship must not turn into showing off. Honouring the title of "hajji" or "umrah pilgrim" is achieved by living it rather than talking about it.
4. Share Zamzam and Gifts
Offering Zamzam water and giving gifts such as dates is a beautiful custom, and a good occasion for visiting neighbours and relatives.
5. Remember Those Who Asked for Prayers
Letting those who entrusted you with their prayers know that you prayed for them, and keeping the bonds with those from whom you sought forgiveness, increases the blessing of the journey.
6. Set the Next Goal
While the excitement of Umrah is still fresh, making an intention for Hajj registration or a new Umrah keeps the heart attached to the holy lands. Remember: whoever sees the Kaaba once longs to see it again.
