This is the house of the noble Companion Ibn al-Arqam (r.a.). The Prophet (s.a.w.) used Dar al-Arqam as a secret centre for calling people to Islam until the number of Muslims reached forty, that is, until Umar ibn al-Khattab (r.a.) embraced Islam. Dar al-Arqam lies close to Safa. One of the gates near Safa is likewise named Arqam. It stands 36 metres east of Safa. It is the spot now reached by following the point where the escalator begins. This site was built as a mosque in 171 AH, and all Muslims held it in reverence until the year 1375 AH, when it was demolished in order to expand the Masjid al-Haram.
